More than six years after he was charged for causing the death of his reputed wife, Gavin Towler is facing trial for manslaughter at the Georgetown High Court.Towler is accused of unlawfully killing his wife, Samantha Marques, between October 13 and 19, 2009. The accused is currently on bail. He pleaded not guilty to the charge before Justice Joann Barlow yesterday.According to the facts of the matter, which were presented by Prosecutors Narissa Leander and Michael Shahoud, the accused had used a pillow to suffocate his wife after they were involved in an argument.Prosecutors are expected to call eight witnesses to the stand to testify during the trial. Yesterday they called the victim’s mother, Roseann Singh to the stand.The woman essentially recounted that she had witnessed the Post Mortem examination conducted on her daughter’s remains at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, (GPHC). She recalled that the autopsy was performed by Dr. Nehaul Singh, in the presence of a police rank.Singh’s testimony was followed by evidence led by the victim’s two daughter, Michelle and Sarah Vieira. They told the court that on October 13, 2009, their stepfather and mother were having an argument, during which he held their mother’s head under a pillow. At the time, the witnesses said, the accused also distributed blows about their mother’s head and body.According to reports, the incident took place at the couple’s Middle Road, Georgetown residence. Subsequent to the beating Marques had continuously complained about feeling unwell. She was taken to GPHC, where she was admitted and later died.The post mortem report revealed that Marques died as a result of blunt trauma, subdural haematoma (bleeding into the space between the dura {brain cover} and the brain itself),Bismack Biyombo Jersey, and a fractured hip.Dr. Nehaul Singh is expected to testify about his finding when the matter resumes today.
