“A kaleidoscope of China”, a photographic exhibition depicting the modern Chinese lifestyle, was on Tuesday afternoon launched at the Region Ten Business Centre (LEAP building),on Republic Avenue, Linden, by China’s Ambassador to Guyana Zhang Jungao.The exhibition is part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China, and comprises 60 photographic exhibits.Ambassador Zhang Jungao explains the finer points to LEAP’s Tina HorslenAmbassador Zhang said that he was very pleased to attend the launching of the exhibition in Linden, which followed a two week exhibition at the National Museum in Georgetown. Ever since, especially since the reform and opening up in 1978, profound and tremendous changes in almost every field have taken place in China.China, once a poor country, now enjoys initial prosperity. Once closed and isolated, it is now open and confident.”Ambassador Zhung said that he was honoured to have grown up, simultaneously with the great nation; and to have experienced and witnessed first hand, the profound changes in the lifestyles of the Chinese people.He reminisced on his childhood years, when China’s economy was “a shortage economy” which meant rationing, long lines and a general scarcity of consumer goods.The Chinese Ambassador also reflected on how his mother used to carefully save grocery coupons, to redeem at the shops. He shared his personal triumph in acquiring his first wrist watch, which cost him an entire four months salary in the late 70’s.He pointed out that in those days wrist watches, bicycles, sewing machines and radios were the luxury goods and considered the “four big commodities”.However sustained increases in income have guaranteed a steadily rising standard of living over the past thirty years, according to the Ambassador.One of the exhibitsThe result of this is that the “four big commodities” have been upgraded to a television set, refrigerator, air conditioner and personal computer, which are no longer considered luxuries, but rather necessities of life.The Ambassador added that without the reform and opening up there would not have been such changes in China, over such a short period; and drew attention to the rising of Shenzhen City, which was one of the first cities to be opened up in the coastal areas.Formerly a small fishing village with a population of less than 30,000, this “village” has now become a modern city with a population of over 10 million and a per capita GDP of over US$10,000.Shenzhen boasts a skyline that would rival Manhattan, and “Shenzhen Speed” is symbolic of the rapid development of China, Ambassador Zhang proudly asserted.“This exhibition reflects the various fields of the Chinese life, including food, clothing, housing and transportation, through which you will meet the industrious and optimistic Chinese people, and find colourful and dynamic China,” Ambassador Zhang said.The exhibition is a collaborative venture between the Chinese Embassy, the National Museum and the Region Ten Tourism Association.First Vice President of the Region Ten Tourism Association, Wilfred Simmons, lauded the initiative, and expressed optimism of a successful exhibition.And LEAP’s Business Development Officer, Tina Horslen, said that it was an honour to host the event, which is the second for the year at this venue.The first, “China’s Thirtieth Parallel”, was hosted earlier this year.She said that she hoped that in the future, the Region Ten Tourism Association, would develop closer relations with China.Also on hand to witness the launching of the photographic exhibition was Ambassador Zhang’s wife, and a Chinese delegation.The exhibition will run for two weeks.
