Probation officers leading two of the children they picked up on the streets into the Child Protection Agency on Friday night.Senior probation officers Pamela Heywood and Concheeta Gray, Junior Probation Officer, Leon France and Corporals Shawndell Williams and Brian Towler of the Juvenile Branch made up the team that went out on Friday night to look for children on the streets.When I caught up with them they had already come back from their first trip to the Stabroek area where they had picked up three children.I was invited to head out with them on their second run for the night. After passing the Camp and Middle Street junction, the team decided to pass by Bourda, however as Cpl Williams remarked, “You see so many of these children when you’re not working, but when you are it’s so hard to find them.” She has been on these raids for the better part of three years now.The team decides to head to Sherriff street with a pass through Kitty. But as traffic comes to a halt at the junction of Thomas Lands and Vlissengen Road we spot something we’ve been looking for all the time. Standing at the lights, begging drivers is a little boy. Four team members get out of the bus and on opposite sides of the road, corner the little boy before he can run.The bus then pulls into the corner and the officers put the little boy into the bus. By this time the entire line of traffic is staring out the window, probably wondering if they’ve just witnessed an abduction.Probation Officer Heywood gives a quick rundown of how the process works. She says that the children are questioned about their presence on the road at that hour, where they live, where are their parents, their phone number, names of relatives, etc. If they cannot give account for themselves they are taken to the office and they are processed.They run through the drill with the little boy we had just picked up. He says that his name is Akeem (not his real name) and that he lives at Kaneville. He tells the officers that he is eleven years old and that his mother knows where he is; he is the eldest child and he attends Grove Primary School where he just wrote his Common Entrance and he’s waiting for his results.The officers ask him why he’s begging, and by this time he’s crying a little, but he tells them that he uses the money to buy things to eat and gives money to his mother to buy food. He says that she knows where the money he gives her comes from.Eventually he stops crying and by the time the bus passes through Kitty and gets to Sherriff Street via David Street, he is quiet.As the bus cruises down Sherriff Street we pass Survival Supermarket and we spot two little children arguing at the corner before Buddy’s Pool Hall. The team decides to pull into the corner and just let them pass the bus on the inside of the road. As they pass the door, a Probation Officer holds on to a little girl but before the other Officer can grab hold of the little boy who was with her, he runs away.The team gets out and begins to search for the boy while the little girl is put into the bus. This one doesn’t cry though. Instead she puts up quite a fuss and answers all of the questions directed at her belligerently while stating over and over that she needs to go home.The usual questions are asked but all she can say is that she lives in North Sophia with her grandmother.
