Tricks in the European Championships
The first hat trick in the final tournament of the European Championships did not occur until as Nike Runners late as 1976, on the fifth occasion the competition was staged. The first player to achieve the feat was the West German striker Dieter Muller, in the semi final against Yugoslavia. West Germany Nike Shox Rivalry Mens Running Shoes were trailing by two goals to one before Muller hit a late equalizer in the 84th minute. The game then remained deadlocked into the second period of extra time, when Muller scored twice more to clinch a 4 2 victory. Muller scored again in the final but in a losing cause.
The next hat trick hero at the Euros was a compatriot of Muller, Klaus Allofs in 1980. West Germany had already won their opening match before Allofs shot them into a three nil lead over the Netherlands. The Dutch came back, but lost the match 3 2. West Germany went on to win the tournament, although Allofs, who scored 17 goals in his international career, did not find the net again in the competition.
Michel Platini at France 84The 1984 European Championships were about one man: Michel Platini. The Tiffany Co Adelaide French play maker dominated the tournament, leading France to victory on home turf, and breaking all individual goalscoring records in the process. Platini had already netted the winner in France's opening match before he took control of the competition. Platini opened the scoring against Belgium as France went three up by half time, he then added a fourth from the penalty spot before completing his hat trick in the 89th minute to seal a 5 0 win. France fell behind in their final group match against Yugoslavia, but Platini fired in three second half goals to lead his side to a 3 2 win. No player before or since has scored two hat tricks in one championship, let alone in consecutive matches. Platini went on to score twice more in the latter stages as France were crowned champions.
Dutch Masters at the European ChampionshipsWhen the Netherlands met England in 1988, both teams were in trouble having lost their opening group matches. The first half was understandably tense before the Dutch forward Marco Van Basten opened the scoring just before the break. England equalized in the second half, but the match ultimately belonged to Van Basten. He struck twice in the last twenty Nike Online Australia minutes to lead the Dutch to Tiffany And Co New York a deserved win, and set them on the road to lifting the trophy. Van Basten went on to score 24 goals in just 58 games for the Netherlands, before having his career cut short by injury.
No player managed a hat trick in either 1992 or 1996, and the Euro 2000 tournament was well under way before Sergio Conceicao destroyed Germany in the final game of the group stages, scoring all the goals in a 3 0 victory for Portugal. If that hat trick seemed a long time coming, it had been even longer since one was scored in the knock out rounds of the tournament. Not since Dieter Muller in 1976 had anyone managed it. That record was also set straight in 2000, when Patrick Kluivert became the second Dutchman to score a Euro treble. Kluivert was the driving Nike Shox Nz Eu - Mens force as the co hosts ripped through a Yugoslavian defense which was soon to boast the unwanted record of conceding three Euro hat tricks. The dynamic forward hit three goals inside an hour as the Netherlands romped to a 6 1 win. Any player scoring a hat trick since 1976 Nike Shoes Australia had also gone on to gain a winner's medal, but in another break with tradition, neither Portugal nor the Netherlands went on to win Euro 2000.
Like the nineties tournaments, Euro 2004 passed without any player bagging a hat trick, but Euro 2008 was in its first week when Spanish forward David Villa scored three goals against Russia in his country's opening match of the campaign. Villa's Longchamp Le Pliage Cuir Australia goals helped Spain to a 4 1 win, and set the tone for a tournament which saw them clinch a second European title.
