VanCompernolle and Heaney take home top honors
UNCW Press ReleaseWILMINGTON, North Carolina New Balance 993 Amazon Senior defender Jacob VanCompernolle and Head Coach Aidan Heaney were named Defensive Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, respectively, as UNCW earned six All Colonial Athletic Association honors on Wednesday. Joining VanCompernolle, who earned first team All CAA honors for the second straight season, on the first team were junior forward Colin Bonner and senior midfielder Jamie Dell. Senior David Nike Roshe Run Sizemore was named to the second team and senior defender Mark Harris to the third team. Freshman defender Brayden Smith earned All Rookie honors. "This is a great recognition for the players and their performances this season," said UNCW Head Coach Aidan Heaney. "They've performed at the very highest levels and that's proven by our results. This is a special group of players and I'm delighted that our league's coaches also recognized that." Heaney, who is in his 14th season as head coach at UNCW, earned his fourth CAA Coach of the Year designation after guiding the team to a share of the Nike Roshe Black regular season crown and a record of 12 3 2. Bonner, who was a second team All CAA selection as a sophomore, scored four goals and assisted on three other Seahawk scores. Bonner, along with VanCompernolle, was also named Capital One Academic All District earlier this month. Dell exploded this season for a career high 10 goals and leads the Seahawks with 22 points. Six of his goals this season were game winners and rank him third nationally. Sizemore started all 17 games at midfield and finished the regular season with a goal and three assists. His goal came against UNCG and he added assists against Ohio State, William Mary and Elon. Harris earned All CAA honors for the first time after helping lead the league's top defense. Smith, meanwhile, earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors twice and finished the season Abercrombie Melbourne Florida with a goal and a pair of assists. His goal against Hofstra was the difference maker in UNCW's 2 0 win over the Pride. Delaware's Guillermo Delgado was named CAA Player of the Year while Northeastern newcomer Frantzdy Pierrot was the league's Rookie of the Year.
