| On Thursday night about 20-odd violent villagers ambushed and assaulted a few staff members of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, who were transporting a patient to his residence in Craig, East Bank of Demerara. They arrived some 30 minutes later, at which time, the patient was returned to the ambulance, and staff members were returning to the hospital for they feared for their safety and lives.In the statement the GPHC said that over the years, staff members have had to face similar cases whereby relatives blatantly refused to take their relatives in after they would have been discharged from the hospital; it has never however reached this violent magnitude.On an average per month, GPHC accommodates some six to eight destitutes and/or patients whose relatives refuse to take them home after discharge.The hospital said this problem also exists with patients who die in the hospital and whose relatives do not claim their bodies and take them to a funeral home.“GPHC is then forced to undertake the responsibility of providing a poor burial, which costs the hospital hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly.” |
