| Former Chairman of The United Force (TUF), Fred Fredericks, has died, says leader of the party, Manzoor Nadir.In a statement, Nadir noted that Fredericks was instrumental in gaining recognition for Amerindian Heritage Day – which is celebrated every September – and the founding of the National Toshaos Council.Fredericks, 82, died early yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation, TUF said.In addition to being the Retired Chairman of the TUF, Fredericks was a Past President of the Guyana Organization of Indigenous People (GOIP) and a “staunch and strong builder of faith at the Brickdam Cathedral”, the party said.Fred Fredericks“Most Guyanese would not even notice his passing nor know of the contributions he has made to our country. I have had the opportunity to work very closely with the late Fred Fredericks for over two decades and can testify to the important and significant contributions which he made in politics, in the improvements in the lot of our indigenous people and in the Catholic Church,Jerseys From China,” Nadir said in his tribute message.“Uncle Fred, as he had been fondly known, was an integral part of our party’s campaign for free and fair election. He and I campaigned through the length and breadth of our country during the struggles of the early 90’s. He encouraged his people to be proud of their heritage and to aspire to the greatest heights…”Of significance in the life of the former TUF Chairman was the recognition of Amerindian Heritage Day on September 10 – “the day the late Stephen Campbell (the first Amerindian to be elected, entered Parliament. To this end he assisted and promoted the Stephen Campbell Memorial Lecture that was held at the Tower Hotel on September 10, 1994 and delivered by Ms. Laureen Pierre. Here the call was made for the observance of Amerindian Heritage Day.”According to Nadir, Fredericks was the brains of the National Toshaos Council.“This was included in the submission of The United Force to the Constitution Review Commission. Today his daughter, Chief Yvonne Pearson, is the head of that body.”The GOIP was also provided an office at Fredericks’ residence and where the organization operated for more than a decade.“Today GOIP is the most established indigenous and nonpolitical Amerindian organization.”The TUF leader noted that Fredericks was elected Chairman of the party in April 1992 and held that position until 2005 when he relinquished the post to concentrate on his work with the Brickdam Cathedral. |
