| On January 6,Chicago White Sox Jerseys, last, the passenger/cargo vessel MV Lady Northcote stranded a number of passengers trying to get from Georgetown to Port Kaituma when it experienced mechanical problems.Subsequently repaired, the vessel again went out of commission on February 17, last when it sustained damage to the propeller assembly.Since then the vessel has remained out of commission leaving the route to Port Kaituma without service at present.The necessary repairs to the screws require that the MV Lady Northcote be dry-docked.However at present the Transport and Harbors Department is currently engaged in general repairs on the MV Barima in the dry dock facility.In an effort to facilitate those passengers who desperately need the service for the easy transport of their goods, the hull of MV Barima will be resealed, repair operations suspended and she will be removed from the dry dock to allow for the repairs to the MV Lady Northcote.According to Mr. Kevin Trim, General Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department, there has been a problem standing in the way of the two vessels exchanging places.The water levels at the entry of the dry dock are a limiting factor. As a result of the water levels dropping in response to the current weather conditions the silt deposits are now higher making it impossible to remove the MV Barima without getting the vessel trapped in the silt.The conditions around the mouth of the dry dock preclude the use of a dredge removing the silt so the operation has to be done manually.Mr. Trim noted that the dredging operation is expected to be concluded within another week and the MV Lady Northcote will be repaired as quickly as possible.MV Lady Northcote which was built by The Ferguson Brothers at a shipyard in Glasgow, Scotland in 1937 is only one member of an aging fleet of vessels with which the Transport and Harbors Department has to contend at present as they await the arrival of the two new Chinese Ferries. |
